Video game News

News covers what happened and when: release windows, announcements, fact sheets, event results and the deals that shaped the industry. Each item is dated and kept as it stood at the time.

Most items are short by design: the facts, the date and enough context to place them in the year they happened.

[N] Background

The years in the archive

2017

The year the Nintendo Switch launched in March and the Xbox One X arrived in November, and the year battle royale went mainstream with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and the free Fortnite mode that followed in September. Retailers were adjusting to a market moving towards digital sales, which is the background to changes such as GameStop's paid rewards tiers.

2018

A year of large single-player releases, God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 among them, and of a long, steady run-up to Farming Simulator 19. That run-up is followed here week by week, from FarmCon in July to the editions and pre-order bonuses in October, because it shows how a game with a dedicated audience is announced in small, regular pieces.

2019

The archive closes in February 2019 with the first community maps for Farming Simulator 19, three months after its launch. The full Farming Simulator 19 review, published at launch in November 2018, sits in the reviews section. It is a fitting end point: the news that began with a list of announced features ends with players building on the finished game themselves.

Why old news is kept

A dated news item records what was announced, which is not always what happened. Release dates move, editions change and features are cut before launch. Keeping each item as it stood on the day makes it possible to compare the promise with the result, and the reviews and features in the other sections often do exactly that.
